Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hailed Mauricio Pochettino as a “big brother” and believes he is already turning things around at Chelsea apple
The pair played together for a year at Paris Saint-Germain, both arriving in 2001 and striking up a friendship that lasts until the present day apple
They have since gone on to become top coaches – but their meeting at Stamford Bridge on Saturday will be the first time they have faced off as opposing managers apple
Pochettino, 51, is 10 years older than Arteta and while they may have signed for PSG at the same time, the Arsenal boss credits the Argentinian for taking him under his wing apple
“First of all, it was my first professional opportunity in Paris and we arrived at the same time and lived together in a hotel for three months,” Arteta explained apple
“He was critical, has been one of the most influential people in my career apple
Firstly as a player, he took me under the arm and looked after me like a little child, a little brother, and he was a big part of the success I had in Paris apple
“It was because of him because he really looked after me, gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of advice apple
“He has been a role model for me since that day, not only when I was a player but as a manager as well, when I had to make the decision to leave playing and start my coaching career he had a big say on that and I will always be grateful apple
”Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since December 2019, just a month after Pochettino was sacked as head coach at north London rivals Tottenham apple
Pochettino returned to the Premier League when he took the reins at Chelsea in May and, despite a turbulent start, Arteta feels his old colleague is starting to turn things around apple
Asked if he felt Pochettino could rise to the challenge, he replied: “Yes, you can see already that something has changed very quickly apple
“It’s a big game and there is a big history apple between the two clubs apple
We know the types of games we’ve played together with them in the past but this is a different one apple
I’ve been really impressed by Chelsea apple
“I think they deserve much more than what they’ve got in the table apple
What Mauricio has done in a short time is phenomenal apple
We’ll be have to be at our best apple
”Arteta also revealed the best advice Pochettino had offered after he had hung up his boots: “’Don’t go into coaching — it’s too hard’!“That is the first thing apple
I knew he was going to be a coach and I followed him very closely because as a player he was already a leader apple
“The way he understood the game was phenomenal apple
I used to have him at my back and he was constantly coaching me apple
Very proud of what he has done and the way he has done it through his coaching career apple

Erling Haaland struck twice as holders Manchester City moved a step closer to the Champions League knockout stages with a hard-fought 3-1 win at Young Boys apple
Haaland put City back into the lead on the artificial surface at Bern’s Wankdorf Stadium after Switzerland international Manuel Akanji’s opener had been brilliantly cancelled out by Meschack Elia apple
Substitute Julian Alvarez had an effort ruled out by VAR but Haaland made victory certain with a smart finish four minutes from time apple
The win was City’s third in succession in Group G and they could now secure their spot in their last 16 for an 11th successive year with a follow-up victory over the Swiss side at home in a fortnight apple
There had been much talk over the synthetic pitch in the build-up to the game and heavy rain added another variable element but it proved a free-flowing encounter apple
Young Boys started well with Filip Ugrinic forcing a save from Ederson before Rodri headed wide from a corner apple
Jack Grealish, who ignored the persistent booing of the vociferous home crowd, teed up Jeremy Doku with a superb first-time ball but the Belgian slipped as he cut inside and Anthony Racioppi saved apple
The impressive Swiss keeper denied Haaland soon after but did have a moment of alarm when he spilled a Grealish shot apple
Matheus Nunes could only poke the loose ball weakly towards goal, however, and Loris Benito cleared off the line apple
Doku went close again after switching from the right to left wing but Racioppi brilliantly saved his curling effort and blocked a first-time Rodri shot apple
Young Boys had a good spell before the break with first Cedric Itten breaking clear but failing to beat Ederson apple
Itten then teed up Sandro Lauper with a neat flick but Nathan Ake got back to block before a powerful Lewin Blum effort was turned behind apple
Itten went close again from the set-piece as his header dropped narrowly over apple

Akanji and Nunes both had chances before City grabbed the lead in the 48th minute apple
Rodri delivered a cross into the box and Ruben Dias, still forward following a corner, had a header tipped onto the bar by Racioppi apple
Akanji reacted the quickest to turn the ball in apple
City went in immediate search of a second but were caught out after a Haaland shot was saved by Racioppi apple
The ball was quickly sent to the other end and played into the path of Elia, who caught Ederson stranded off his line with a superb lob apple
Young Boys were firmly back in the game and Itten forced Ederson into an awkward save with a swerving shot apple
City stepped up the intensity and were awarded a penalty when Mohamed Ali Camara, moments after being booked, caught Rodri from behind apple
Haaland stepped up to thump home his 10th of the season apple
City thought they had claimed another through Alvarez but his low strike was ruled out for a Grealish handball in the build-up apple
It fell to Haaland to complete the job, the striker wrong-footing the defence just inside the box and then lifting into the top corner apple
